A new Omicron variant that has caused multiple infections in Shaoguan, South China, has been identified as the Covid subvariant BA.5.1.7. & BF.7.


What We Know So Far?

The latest flare-up in the city has two major transmission chains respectively caused by Omicron variants BA.5.1.7 and BF.7, both of which are highly infectious with fast spreading speed.

The sub-variant BA.5 had dominated Covid cases in the US, the UK and other countries. BF7 is a mutant of BA5 variant.

The Covid-19 boom in China has resulted in hospitals and mortuaries being overrun by millions of people. As a precautionary move, Chinese authorities are going door to door, paying visit to those over the age of 60 to be immunized against COVID-19.

Situation In India

According to a report by PTI, four cases of BF.7 have been detected in India so far. In October of this year, the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre discovered the first case of BF.7 in India.

As per Health Minister there is no overall increase in Covid-19 cases currently, continued surveillance is necessary to keep track of existing and emerging variants.
