Secrets to never losing motivation: Types and its link to productivity

We often need the motivation to work on most of our dreams. It may not be well laid by every goalkeeper, but it is there anyway. Achieving a goal is very simple if you find something that moves you. Lack of motivation may delay or make the accomplishment of a goal difficult.

It is what encourages, builds that feeling inside you to act. Be it using an umbrella during rain to reach a particular destination or completing a course to get a job? Motivation encompasses the biological, emotional, social, and cognitive forces that trigger behavior.

Culture and values play a great role

This might not have occurred to you, but factors like culture and values play an important role in determining your motivation. For example, if you were born in a family where social service has been an integral part of the value, you may be motivated to do charities or take up a role to help others.

Similarly, if you are surrounded by people who emphasize on building a great career, or they have already achieved professional success, it is likely that you might also have a wonderful career ahead because of your lifestyle.

But what kind of motivation is of utmost importance? What we feel from within or via someone/something in the external environment.

What is extrinsic motivation?

In simple words, external motivation pushes an individual to complete tasks and learn something new so as to get rewards or to avoid any punishment. In this case, you won’t do it because it’s tempting or satisfying, but you’ll rather do it to get something valuable in return or to avoid something unpleasant.

EXAMPLES:

  • Doing work to earn money
  • Study to get good marks
  • Do social service to get a certificate
  • Learn a skill to add to your resume
  • Sticking to the same brand because you’ll get loyalty points
  • Cleaning the room because you don't want to get scolded
  • Get ready and click pictures to maintain your social media feed
  • Join a club because your crush goes to the same place
  • Go on a business trip because your boss asked you to do so

What Is intrinsic motivation?

Intrinsic motivation refers to doing something for which there is no evident reward. You do this out of your own will because you enjoy it or it makes you happy and not because of external pressure. In short, the change in behavior is the reward here. Self-motivation makes you achieve greater things than anyone’s encouragement would do.

EXAMPLES:

  • Exercise because you feel energized
  • Stay at work more because you love staying occupied
  • Use positive affirmations because you want to transform your mindset for good
  • Earn because you want to be financially independent
  • Travel because it sets you free
  • Take up a project because it interests you
  • Learn a skill because you want to improve
  • Take your kids outdoors because it will make you happy to see them enjoying
  • You write because it is your passion
  • Solve puzzles for your own timepass

Goal setting and motivation

An optimistic approach to goal setting can help you succeed. Factors such as hope, motivation, and optimism have a significant impact on how we achieve our goals.

Goal visualization is a road map that guides you from one place to another and motivation is the force that is needed to reach the goal, and measure progress.

Highly motivated people are trusted by others, stay more focused, and have great self-confidence in their own abilities.

To be successful, strengthen your will, and you must convince yourself - you can!

How motivation impacts employee productivity?

Motivation can increase employee productivity and performance in the workplace. It enables the employees to work better and complete more tasks without giving up.

A motivated employee is likely to achieve a high level of job satisfaction and will establish long-term relationships. The HR department should focus on developing training that increases employee motivation and job satisfaction at the same time.

A good organizational culture where employees feel motivated further attracts more motivated candidates. Ultimately, it reduces employee turnover.

Bottom line

Internal or self-motivation is majorly linked with personal growth, work productivity, and goal setting, whereas external motivation is related to money, fame, status, and recognition.

You might not be born with a silver spoon but you might become capable enough to buy plenty someday.

“Sometimes it's hard to find motivation; sometimes it finds you itself!”
